TIP, TIP, TIP

My TIP is progressing slowly. I had some technical difficulty early on, but I believe that has passed now. My biggest challenge now is the ensure that my students videos are double password protected and that my parents can only view their child's video.

What a fascinating idea for improving students’ reading motivation and fluency. I can see it going either way because students may be encouraged or discouraged by what they see. Also, the idea of becoming more self-conscious can be both a benefit if its related to metacognitive awareness, or a liability if they become paralyzed by their fear of looking silly. Question: you’re interested in the effect of the video. However, I saw only a few ways that this question was directly targeted in your data collection. Can you spend more time getting at the students’ experience of watching the videos? David W.

Monique-

This is going to be really exciting to see what kind of reactions you get from both your students and their parents. You said you will be videotaping the DRA and DIBELs assessment. Can you explain that more? What exactly will the students be reading on video?
You may want to think about revamping some of your survey questions to make them easier to tally or collect totals on. You stated that you would calculate common responses but how exactly? If you had some basic categories for questions it would make it easier to look at the results.
A cool idea may be to video your students talking about being a reader towards the end of the project. You could include these clips in your I-movie.

David,

I do interview them after they've watched the video and the answers are very vague. Because these are Kindergarten students, I expected that the answers would not be sophisticated. So I thought that surveying parents and asking them to blog on TeacherTube to share their successes and failures would be best. I'd hoped that the blogs would be read by other parents of students in my class and that an open forum of communication with me and between parents would develop.

April,

I've made video of them being administered the DIBELS. We don't start DRA until the 2nd semester. DIBELS is a tool which tests students ability to identify letters, Initial Sound Fluency, Segmenting, using words in sentences etc. Their responses are recorded on an handheld PDA. When they take the DRA they will be reading books.

I did think that calculating the data collected in the survey would become too cumbersome, so I purposely made that survey only four questions. Because my students are so young, their responses are usually very short and almost predictable.

I had planned to interview students and parents in creating my IMovie for my final presentation.
Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. You've given me some things to think about.

Hi Monique,

The table at the end of your proposal well explained your plan of data collection. One question I have in mind is how do you define “being shy”. A student is shy because of low reading comprehension rate, or because of his/her personality? I think it will be helpful if you explain what you mean by “being shy” in your study, it will help readers to understand your project. What do you think? Gaoming Z.

Hi Monique!
Wow! it sounds like you've already started! What have been the parents reactions so far? As a parent we all believe that our children are perfect and will have a hard time giving credit to a teacher who says my child needs help! Do the videos help you convince the parents?
I love the surveys you've created! Are you planning to continue with the video theme and film students while you interview them?
Good Luck!
